ではalgoworldとはなんでしょうか。上の紹介文によるとアルゴリズムによって決定、実行されていく、私達の生活の中で膨張し続ける空間を指すようです。ほんじゃアルゴリズムって何なんでしょうか。
From the Google algorithms to the algos that give you “recommendations” online to those that automatically play the stock markets (and sometimes crash them): we may not realize it, but we live in the algoworld.
Google検索からAmazonなどでお馴染みの、その人の好みに合わせたオススメ商品を提示するアルゴリズム。そして、このプレゼンの中でも出てくる、自動で株取引をやってくれるアルゴリズムまで、今や知らないまに私達はこのアルゴリズムという得体の知れないプログラムの中で生きる、かよわき子羊?! になってしまっているようです。
アルゴリズムっていう言葉のWikipediaの説明も読みましたがイマイチわかりにくいので、あれこれググってみたらこちらのサイトのビジュアルな説明が1番わかりやすかったです。
(一般人向けの解説)
さー前提知識はこれぐらいにしてKevin Slavin氏の知的好奇心くすぐられまくりの、アルゴリズムか織り成す美しくも恐ろしい世界を視聴してみましょう。
algorithmic tradingという言葉がプレゼンの最初の方に出てきますが、Wikipediaによれば、
A special class of algorithmic trading is “high-frequency trading” (HFT), in which computers make elaborate decisions to initiate orders based on information that is received electronically, before human traders are capable of processing the information they observe.
トレーダー達が情報を察知して処理するよりも速く、コンピュータが電子的に受け取った情報をもとに、株取引の複雑な決定を行っていくとあり、人間の側からは目に見えないblack box tradingともいえるわけです。
Kevin Slavin氏は何気にイメージしにくいこのalgorithmic tradingを無数の鳥があっちこっちに一定の規則性をもって飛び交う幻想的な動画をスクリーンに映し出しながらプレゼンを進められるので、ビジュアル的にとても分かりやすく、かつかっこイイです。
マーケットを飛び交う無数の株の値動きにもこの鳥達のように一定の規則性があんのかな？でもそんな鳥達のように美しい集団移動にも突然異変が、

2010年5月6日algorithmic tradingの支配するマーケットに大異変が起こります。アメリカ株式市場の9%,約1兆ドルという資産が、わずか数分の間に消え去ります。その時の臨場感を真空パックしたような動画がこちらです。

Kevin Slavin氏によると、
〜 nobody to this day can even agree on what happened, because nobody ordered it, nobody asked for it. Nobody had any control over what was actually happening. All they had was just a monitor in front of them that had the numbers on it and just a red button that said, "Stop."
その時いったい何が起こっていたのか、今もってしても意見の一致なし。なぜなら人間の側ではなんのコントロールもしていなかったと。そして、できた事は、ただStopボタンを押すことだけだったんだと。
株取引、オンラインショップ、そして今や映画のScriptを入力するだけで、その映画がどんだけヒットする映画なのかをはじき出すアルゴリズムまであるというお話まで、さーKevin Slavin氏のプレゼンまだまだ続いていきますよ。Kevin氏は発話スピードも標準的で、発音もクリアーなので、シャドウイングにもピッタリです。
